Determining the Cost of Film

Determining the cost of window tint is a fairly straightforward process, but there are a few different variables involved. The most important thing to consider when estimating the cost of an install is what type of film will need to be used. This can usually be determined by considering what the overall goal is for the project.

Factors to Consider

Before deciding on what type of film you want to use for your home renovations, you may want to consider some of the following factors:

  • Glare: Are you getting a lot of glare on your TV or computer screen?
  • Fading: Does your home have wooden floors or furniture that could be prone to fading?
  • Safety: Are you looking for a way to enhance the safety or security of your home?
  • Indoor comfort: Is it sometimes uncomfortably hot or cold inside your home?
  • Energy cost: Are your energy bills exceptionally high?
  • Aesthetics: Do you have any privacy or aesthetic needs?

Variables that Affect Installation Pricing

Determining the total cost of an installation requires taking a few different expenses into account. Both the cost of the film and the service being provided have to be taken into consideration. Here are just a few things that determine the cost:

Cost of manufacture: How much a film costs to manufacture is an important part of calculating our price. Higher quality films are usually more expensive to manufacture but are often far more effective.

Project size and complexity: The difficulty and size of an install is another important thing to consider. Larger projects tend to cost more since they require more product and labor.

Quality of service and warranty: Though a smaller company may be more affordable, the quality of service they provide could be subpar compared to an experienced, larger company. More established companies also usually stand by their work and provide a solid warranty on their services.

General Cost Estimate

The following information can be used to determine the general cost of a certain style of film. Please note that the actual cost may vary per project.

Spectrally selective: Spectrally selective films only allow certain spectrums of light to enter your windows, so your home stays bright without absorbing heat. These films typically range from $9-18/sq ft.

Low-e: Low-e films are best for homes in dual climate regions because they work year round to control heat and indoor temperatures. These films usually start at $20/sq ft.

Safety & security:
Safety/security window tint is designed to protect your home from intrusion, accidents, and natural disasters. These films range from $8-16/sq ft. Security attachment systems cost an extra $2-5/LFT.

Bullet resistant: Bullet resistant window systems alter glass at the molecular level to make it stronger and more resistant to shattering. This product averages around $125/sq ft.

Decorative or frosted film: Decorative or frosted films can be used for adding privacy or decoration to the interior or exterior of your home. Decorative films range from $6-12/sq ft.

The “Real” Cost of Window Film

Our owner, Martin Faith, recently had an encounter with a client about the cost of window film. You can read his story here:

“I got a call from an existing client asking us to come out and install some more of our ‘free window film.’ I was confused, but he insisted that we did the west side of the house, and he got it for free, and he sounded really happy. After an awkward silence on my end, he eventually said, ‘When Mike came to my home in 2012, I asked him how much I could save on my energy bills. He told me most people pay the film back in 3-5 years. So I got out my old bills for the previous 12 months and wrote down how much I spent each month. Then for the past three years or so I’ve been keeping track of how much I save each month, and as of last month, I have now saved the same amount as I paid you guys for the film. So there you have it! The next time someone asks me how much window film costs, all I have to say is ‘It’s free!'”
